A tour of Malcolm's Studio in Cornwall

In November 2001, after a lot of searching, Malcolm and Jean moved the glass studio to a disused bakery in the historic old town of Penryn in Cornwall. The old bakery had been closed for over 26 years it took about 6 months to convert the bakery into a glass making studio. A huge bread oven had to be dismantled, consisting of around 10,000 bricks and 10 tons of mortar and rubble, before the job of installing all the glass making equipment could begin.

All the glass is free blown, no moulds are used to shape the glass only wet newspaper, wooden blocks and the traditional glassmakers tools. Malcolm enjoys making bowls, vases, dishes and plates that have clean, smooth, simple shapes. For some time now he has been exploring the watery theme of the sea with dolphins and whales as the subjects also polar bears from the arctic and African elephants in the sunset. Since moving to Cornwall Malcolm has been doing more work without any of the figurative element just using colours, softly blended together, as in the sunrise, sunset and spray pieces. He has also been experimenting with glass sculpture, utilising washed up pieces of blackened wood from Queens Wharf in Falmouth, which caught fire in 2002, and combining it with glass forms.
